What is Ted’s Woodworking?
Ted’s Woodworking is a carpentry course that will turn you into a master carpenter in no time at all. This is the beginning of an exciting journey through woodworking and learning, with plenty of hands-on practice along the way. Each lesson builds on previous lessons, as we learn more about woodworking.
Video lessons follow a structure, and are broken down into separate segments that teach you an essential concept in each lesson. Each segment starts with a brief overview of the subject, and then builds on previous material through hands-on practice. You’ll learn by doing – keeping your eye on the prize, and applying what you have learned to your own projects.
Ted’s Woodworking is a carpentry course for the likes of you, that will turn you into a master carpenter in no time at all. You don’t need any classes before hand and you will not need any prior experience either – just follow Ted’s step-by-step videos over the next few weeks.
What are the lessons in Ted’s Woodworking?
The lessons in Ted’s Woodworking are broken down into two main sections:
Lesson 1 – The Basics of Woodworking: This lesson covers the fundamentals of woodworking, including how and why to use tools like planes, saws and knives. You’ll learn about everything from using a router table to building tables, including a table top planer.
Lesson 2 – Basic Woodworking: This lesson covers basic woodworking skills and techniques, including how to use hand tools like axes, saws and routers to cut lumber. You’ll also learn about basics of finishing materials such as paint and stain.
Lesson 3 – Basic Surface Finishing: This lesson covers basic techniques for finishing wood, including how to use stain and paint. You’ll learn about clear finishes like polyurethane varnish and lacquer, as well as stains that you can apply with brushes or rags.
Lesson 4 – Shaping Wood: This lesson covers shaping wood into planks with hand tools such as axes, planes and saws. You’ll also learn how to shape blocks of wood using the table saw, router tables and miter saws. You’ll be building both simple structures (like boards) and more complex furniture (like a bench). The finished product will look great!
Lesson 5 – Carving: This lesson covers carving techniques and materials, including how to use woodworking tools to cut out design in the wood with a router. You’ll also learn about carving tools such as chisels and gouges. The finished product will look great!
Lesson 6 – Finishing Woodwork: This lesson covers finishing all types of woodwork, including natural (unfinished) woods like maple or oak, stained hardwoods like mahogany or walnut and even lacquer finishes that you can apply with brushes or rags. Use this lesson as a foundation for further learning!
Lesson 7 – Basic Framing Techniques: This lesson helps you create basic structural parts using assembly lines (such as doors), drawers and other easy-to-build pieces using miter saws. You’ll learn how simple it is to make things happen on your own at home without needing to hire someone else’s help!
Lesson 8 – Spatial Thinking: This lesson teaches you how to use space and perspective in your woodworking projects, helping you create designs that are both functional (for example, a chair) and decorative. Use this lesson as a foundation for learning more.
Lesson 9 – Woodworking Tools and Techniques: This lesson covers the basics of woodworking tools, including hand tools that you can use to make everything from furniture and bedding to jewelry. You’ll learn about hand tools like saws, planes, routers and table saws.
Lesson 10 – Woodturning Basics: This lesson introduces basic woodturning techniques with a focus on turning workpieces such as bowls, cups and teapots.
