Astrology and human design are two fascinating systems for understanding ourselves and our purpose in life.
While they have some overlaps, they also have key differences in their approach. In this post, we’ll explore both in a positive light and look at how they can complement each other.
A Brief History of Astrology
Astrology has been around for thousands of years, with roots going back to ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China, and Greece. The basic premise is that the positions of the sun, moon, planets, and stars at the exact time and place of our birth impact our personality and life path.
An astrological birth chart is created based on when and where you were born. This chart is unique to you, like a fingerprint. The chart divides the heavens into 12 sections called houses. Each house governs a different area of life, from relationships to career to spirituality. The planets fall in different houses, creating a cosmic weather forecast for your soul.
Astrology was an integral part of culture in many early civilizations and was considered a respected science and art. While its popularity has waxed and waned over the millennia, astrology continues to influence our language, art, psychology, and how we think about time and destiny.
Introducing Human Design
Human design is a relatively new system invented in the late 1980s by Alan Robert Krakower, who went by the name Ra Uru Hu. He presented it as a synthesis of ancient wisdom and modern science, melding astrology, the Hindu chakra system, the Jewish Kabbalah, quantum physics, genetics, and I’Ching.
The basic premise of human design is that we each have a unique genetic blueprint that was fixed at the moment of conception. Your human design chart reveals the mechanics of how you operate, your true nature, and strategy for making optimal decisions.
To create your human design chart, you need your birth date, time, and place. The chart illuminates your personality design by looking at different energy centers in your body called centers. Each center shows how you process that type of energy. There are nine defined centers:
- Solar plexus
- Ajna (third eye)
- G (identity)
The chart also indicates which energy gates are open or closed. This determines how you filter the world. There are 64 energy gates that may be open, closed, or varying.
Your unique combination offers insight into how to live your life in alignment with your true nature. Human design empowers self-knowledge and awareness.
Comparing Key Differences
While human design grew out of astrology, there are key differences between the two systems:
Fixed vs. changing: Your human design chart is fixed for life while your astrology birth chart changes with time as the planets move.
Pre-determined vs. free will: Human design says your energy blueprint is set before birth while astrology leaves room for choice and free will to alter the path.
Personality focus: Astrology looks at personality, life events and your changing outer landscape. Human design reveals your innate inner wiring.
Natures: Astrology shows your shifting moods and energies. Your human design is always the same.
Alignment: Astrology encourages aligning your actions with shifting cosmic weather. Human design is about living aligned to your consistent design.
Timing: Astrology guides timing through transits and moon phases. Human design encourages making major decisions when your energy is receptive.
Evaluating the Value of Both Systems
Astrology and human design both offer incredible value as empowering self-knowledge tools. Here are some positive things both systems provide:
- A deeper understanding of your personality, soul, and life path
- Insight into strengths, weaknesses, and areas for growth
- Guidance on relating to others and building relationships
- Support in key life arenas like careers, finances, and health
- Tools for self-acceptance and maximizing your potential
- Ways to understand patterns and cycles in your life
- Strategies for decision-making and timing key events
- Permission to be your authentic self
Ultimately astrology and human design are complementary. Astrology shows how we engage with external cycles. Human design dives deep into our internal wiring and mechanics. Used together, they provide a powerful framework for living your best life in alignment with your soul purpose.
Embrace the Mystery, Love Yourself
There is still much we don’t understand about the magic and mystery of being human. Systems like astrology and human design offer guideposts to discover our place in the cosmos and fulfill our potential.
I believe there is wisdom to be gained from both astrology and human design. But the most important thing is what you discover about yourself, and how learning to accept and love yourself empowers you to grow.
May both astrology and human design help you embrace your wholeness, celebrate your uniqueness, live authentically, and love deeply. The more we understand ourselves, the more we can understand and connect with others.
That’s an insight as timeless as the stars.
